Day 1- Arrival to Split / Lika region
Arrival to Split airport. You’re met on arrival and transferred with the group to Lika region and the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Prior to dinner, there will be a group briefing so your guide can give you a trip over-view and answer any questions may have. Dinner and overnight at Plitvice.
Day 2- Plitvice Lakes National Park
We’ll rise and avoid the morning crowds for our hike around Plitvice Lakes National Park. We start with a circular hike discovering the upper lakes, descend to the largest lake at Kozjak and then explore the lower lakes, culminating in the 70-meter-high Grand Waterfall. In the afternoon, we depart Plitvice and drive to our hotel on the banks of Gacka river.
HIKING PROFILE: Plitvice Lakes. Level: easy to moderate. Duration: 5h30-6h00 + picnic lunch. Distance: 15 km. Total ascent/descent: +375m -340m. Terrain: rocky hiking path.
Day 3- Northern Velebit National Park & the Premuzic Trail
After breakfast, we drive to Zavizan hut area to start hiking through the heart of the North Velebit National Park. The hike takes us to the Alan mountain hut, via the first stage of the Premuzic trail – a masterpiece of mountain architecture and a trail that opened up some of the wildest areas of the Velebit mountains to the general public. This historic trail was a real ‘life saver’ during the economic crisis of the 1930’s when it was built as many local people living on the coastal slopes of Velebit mountain were employed on the construction of the trail. Upon arrival to Alan mountain hut, we’ll enjoy a refreshing drink before transferring back to our hotel. On the way back, we’ll break the journey to sample the well-known ‘Runolist’ local cheese.
HIKING PROFILE: Premuzic trail stage 1 – from Zavizan to Alan. Level: moderate. Duration: 5h30-6h00 + picnic lunch. Distance: 15 km. Total ascent/descent: +610m -790m. Terrain: rocky hiking path.
Day 4- Satorina 1622m, the highest peak of the Central Velebit Mountains
In the morning, we will transfer to Stirovaca, a small valley situated at 1100m altitude. The valley is surrounded by dense forest due to the abundance in water compared to other parts of Velebit’s karst limestone landscape. We start of our hike towards Satorina which at 1622m is the highest peak of Central Velebit (a height shared with Zecjak Peak at 1622m). The panoramic views from the prominent Satorina peak are spectacular, with the Zavizan peaks to the northwest, and all the way to the southern mountains of Velebit. After enjoying the vistas we descend to the other side of Stirovaca and reach the Kugina kuca hut, where we take a transfer back to our hotel. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
HIKING PROFILE: Satorina 1622m Level: moderate to challenging. Duration: 5h30 + picnic lunch. Distance: 12 km. Total ascent/descent: +550m -430m Terrain: rocky hiking path.
Day 5-Visibaba 1162m and the Nature Park of Central Velebit
After breakfast, we’ll checkout from the hotel and transfer to Dabarski Kukovi area, near Baske ostarije village. From here we’ll take an exciting circular hike discovering the panoramas and amazing rocky towers of Dabarski kukovi area, in Nature Park Velebit. We will ascend the Visibaba peak (1160m), from where we will enjoy a superb view of the coast and islands of Northern Dalmatia and the Kvarner area of Central Velebit. We’ll hike back to our bus and continue to Starigrad Paklenica, a small town situated below Paklenica National Park on Velebit’s southern coast. Overnight and dinner in a family pension.
HIKING PROFILE: Visibaba 1162m & Central Velebit. Level: moderate. Duration: 3h30 + picnic lunch. Distance: 9 km. Total ascent/descent: +350m -350m. Terrain: rocky hiking path.
Day 6– Paklenica National Park and Velika Paklenica Canyon
We take a morning transfer to the plateau of Veliko Rujno in the western part of the Paklenica National Park. We ascent to the saddle dividing the plateau from Velika Paklenica Canyon and descent to the upper parts of the canyon where we’ll relax over a traditional lunch at one of the local huts. After enjoying a home made meal accompanied with a shot of ‘rakija’, cold beer or a glass of wine, we hike down the stunning Velika Paklenica , a deep canyon carved in the limestone rock by a stream coming down from Velebit Mountains. Towering above us are spectacular cliffs known to rock climbers worldwide, who come to enjoy the many challenging pitches on the edge of the Adriatic. In late afternoon, we descend to Starigrad Paklenica and relax over dinner at our hotel.
HIKING PROFILE: From Veliko Rujno village to Velika Paklenica Canyon. Level: moderate to challenging. Duration: 5h30 + picnic lunch. Distance: 14 km. Total ascent/descent: +420m -1190m. Terrain: rocky hiking path.
DAY 7– Nature Park Velebit and Krupa River Canyon
After breakfast, we transfer to the southeastern tip of Velebit Nature Park and the area around Zrmanja and Krupa River. We hike to the banks of Krupa and, if water levels allow it, to the confluence of the Krupa and Zrmanja, two beautiful, green and clean karstic rivers typical of Dalmatia’s karst topography. In the afternoon we’ll briefly visit the ancient coastal town Zadar, before continuing on to the small town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site close to the Airport at Split where we’ll have dinner and overnight.
HIKING PROFILE: Krupa river Canyon Level: moderate. Duration: 4h00 + picnic lunch. Distance: 10 km. Total ascent/descent: +500m -500m. Terrain: rocky hiking path.
DAY 8– Departure from Split
Short transfer to Split Airport for your departure flights or trip extensions.
