Bears of the Velebit Mountains

The 145-kilometre long Velebit Massif is one of the most biodiverse areas in the Balkans with a range of unique habitats that support species such as the Balkan chamois, red deer, brown bear, wolf and Eurasian lynx.

Rewilding Europe has acquired 22,500-hectares of hunting concessions, situated between two large national parks, together creating a zone of 52,500 hectares.

The landscape hosts an extraordinary diversity of different habitats, from barren Mediterranean landscapes at sea level, through vast tracts of beech forest, to almost boreal systems and alpine grasslands at higher altitudes.

The two hides we’ll use for night time observation of bears and other wildlife are located in the forested mountains of the Velebit Nature Park. The bears are active at night and the hides have mirror glass and external night lights, and can accommodate up to 3 people with 2 beds and a toilet.

We’ll arrive at the hides by late afternoon and will remain in the hides throughout the nights in the hope of observing European brown bear and other wildlife such as wild boar, fox, roe deer and if lucky Golden jackal.

At around 10am each day as bear and wildlife activity slows down we’ll leave the hides and spend the morning and afternoon exploring the Velebit Nature Park by vehicle and on foot. The walks will take in spectacular karst limestone formations and panoramic vistas from the Park’s coastal high points offering spectacular views of the offshore islands.

We will soon offer small group trips with regular fixed dates throughout the year so that two couples can join as group of 4 to enjoy spectacular wildlife watching. We currently offer a ‘Make it Private’ trip option that is ideal for families or small groups of friends who enjoy adventures together. Make it private allows you the freedom to choose your own dates as a stand alone wildlife watching trip or as part of a longer holiday to Croatia.

Day 1  Arrival

Arrive in Split or Zadar and transfer to Gospic (transfers can be arranged for you to Gospic at an additional cost and are not included in the trip cost)

Dinner is not included as there are numerous restaurants in Gospic. Overnight at Hotel Ana, Gospic.

Days 2 & 3 Wildlife watching

During daylight hours you’ll walk the mountain trails of Velebit Nature Park with an expert local wildlife guide. The Velebit Mountains is one of the most biodiverse landscapes in Europe with many canyons, ancient forests, and a high density of Brown bears. The walks will take in spectacular karst limestone formations and panoramic vistas over the Nature Park from coastal high points that offer spectacular views of the offshore islands. In the late afternoons of Days 2 & 3 we’ll drive to the two wildlife-watching hides and settle in for an evening of wildlife-watching. The two hides are located close to each other and each hide has two beds and a toilet. The hides have mirror glass and have been designed to allow night-time wildlife watching as this is when bears are the most active and visit the hides. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Day 4 Departure

We depart the hides at dawn and transfer back to Gospic for onward travel (B).

Dates

Our group departures are monthly small groups of 4. Suitable for couples, families or two friends travelling together due to sharing 2 person wildlife hides.
