Wildlife & Wolf Howling in Central Sweden
- Beautiful Manor House accommodations.
- Excellent chances of sighting wild moose.
- Close encounters with beavers via boat.
- Overnight in the forest listening for howling wolves.
- Visit to the Lankälven rewilding project.
- Small group led by a local, expert naturalist guide.
Day 1 Arrival and transfer to Färna Manor in Bergslagen
You’ll be met by your guide at Stockholm Arlanda Airport for a 2-hour transfer with the group to Färna Manor. Built in 1776 the Manor was redesigned into its current appearance in 1857. Accommodations are spread through the manicured gardens over 6 different wings which share the stylish manor house with its beautiful dining rooms, lounge bar and lovely conservatory. Dining features local, and estate-grown produce.
Day 2 Visit the Lankälven Rewilding Project followed by Moose tracking
After an early breakfast, we’ll drive to Lankälven to meet with Alexander Baker and discover how along with local stakeholders they’re rewilding the Lankälven River. We’ll enjoy a locally produced picnic lunch and take part in rewilding activities.
In the afternoon we’ll drive back towards Färna Manor and explore small roads and forest trails that are proven to be some of Sweden’s best for moose watching. We walk with our expert moose tracking guide looking for hoof prints and moose.
Day 3 Beaver watching by boat
After a long day and late night, there’s time for a leisurely breakfast. The morning and afternoon are free to swim in the lake, paddle a canoe, relax in Manor gardens or walk trails searching for berries and mushrooms in the surrounding forest.
In the evening we go on a beaver safari on a nearby lake and river. We explore in small boats powered by silent electric motors hoping to spot beaver and their lodges. As we silently glide over the water, we can enjoy birding and if lucky spot other mammals.
The trip lasts about 5-hours, and we enjoy dinner on a small island in the lake before continuing our beaver adventure down the river. We head back to Färna Manor late at night.
Day 4 Wolf Howling
After another late night, you can again enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lunch.
After lunch, we head out to a secret wolf territory in a nearby forest. We search for paw prints, droppings, killed prey and other signs that give us a clue that wolves are around.
We set up our camp together, light the campfire and enjoy a tasty fireside camp meal.
As darkness descends, we move closer to the wolves to increase our chances of hearing them howl. This can mean walking in the dark for up to an hour in rough, forest terrain. Our aim is to reach a strategic location where we can settle down for a few hours in silence hoping that the wolves will howl.
Hearing wolves’ howl is one of nature’s most exciting experiences and although we cannot guarantee that it will happen, we do actually hear wolves howl on most of our tours.
Around midnight we return to camp and enjoy a night sleeping in nature in our tents.
Day 5 Final Day in Bergslagen
After waking up in nature we return to Färna Manor for lunch. There’s time to shower before we depart to the train station for your journey back to Stockholm or Arlanda Airport.
