Bison and wildlife tracking in the Tarçu Mountains

  • Flagship Rewilding Europe and WWF Bison reintroduction initiative.
  • Bison tracking with expert local guide in a small group.
  • Immersive nature experience in the wild Tarçu Mountains.
  • Chamois tracking and evening bear hide.
  • Armenis village cultural experiences.
Day 1 Timisoara Airport to Armenis Village

Today you’ll be met at Timisoara Airport and transferred with the group to the small village of Armenis in the Tarçu Mountains of Southern Carpathia. On arrival, you’ll settle into our guesthouse accommodations in the village and your local guide will give you an orientation about the coming days and activities. There’s time for a village walk before enjoying a traditional dinner with your guide and group.

Day 2 Bison tracking and tented camp

We’ll enjoy an early breakfast before transferring to the nearby forest to start tracking Bison. Our guide has been updated on the current location of Bison by the rangers and we’ll start searching for fresh tracks. After a morning searching for Bison, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and continue our search in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, we’ll head back to the tented camp where we’ll spend the next two nights. Dinner will be around the campfire and then we’ll take a night walk in the hope of encountering nocturnal animal and bird activity.

Day 3 Birding and Bison tracking

We’re up early to catch the dawn chorus. As we sit in the orchard close to camp enjoying coffee, we’ll enjoy the birding. Walking back to camp we’ll have breakfast before heading out in vehicles towards the Bison herd. The rest of the day is spent tracking Bison with a packed lunch. In the late afternoon, we’ll return to the camp for dinner. After dinner, we can relax around the campfire or take a short night walk.

Day 4 Community activities with the locals
Early morning birding with coffee and snacks followed by breakfast at camp. We’ll then head back to Armenis village and our local guesthouse. The rest of the day is spent relaxing and enjoying activities in the village with locals. The village is a critical part of the social enterprise that makes the Bison reintroduction possible. Locals are dependent on the economic benefits of rewilding and nature-based tourism, and they are keen to share their way of life and culture. The day’s activities end with a traditional dinner with local hosts.

Day 5 Rusca Valley, Chamois tracking and Bear Hide

After breakfast, we’ll depart Artemis and drive to the Rusca Valley where we’re based at a rustic cabin and bear hide. In the morning we’ll bird watch, relax, walk and swim in the nearby lake. After lunch, we’ll track Chamois and birdwatch. Returning to the cabin we’ll settle into the hide for the evening hoping that bears and other wildlife will visit.

Day 6 Departure to Timisoara

After breakfast, we’ll pack and drive to the airport in Timisoara for our onward flight connections.
