Day 1 Arrival to Porto

Arrive at Porto Airport and either take a taxi (20 minutes) or Metro Line E (25 minutes) to downtown and make your way to the Legendary Porto Hotel where the group will stay overnight. There’s a group meeting and orientation at the hotel at 17:00 followed by a short walking tour of the historic centre of Porto and dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 2 Upper Côa Valley – Vale Carapito Rewilding Area and the wetlands of Paul dos Toirões

After an early breakfast, we’ll transfer to the recently acquired rewilding area of Paul dos Toirões. This new wetland site was a former mine and it is envisioned that the site will be expanded to become part of a cross-border wildlife corridor that hosts beaver, otter, deer, and semi-wild Sorraia horses. In the time it is hoped that abundant prey species will encourage Iberian wolf and lynx to cross the border into the rewilding area. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing to the Vale Carapito where we’ll walk part of the way to our hotel at Termas do Cró where it’s possible to enjoy a thermal bath before dinner.

Day 3 Upper Côa Valley

After breakfast, we’ll walk along part of the Côa Valley Grand Route. Today’s walk takes along the Côa River where we hope to spot Griffon Vultures, Golden or Bonelli’s eagles or if we’re lucky we may spot roe deer, fox, or wild boar. We’ll have lunch before continuing our walk down the river. In the late afternoon, we’ll transfer to Casa da Cisterna where we’ll spend the next 2 nights. This evening we’ll enjoy dinner and a craft beer tasting in Castelo Rodrigo.

Day 4 Lower Côa Valley – Ermo das Aguias

After breakfast, we’ll take a short transfer to Ermo das Águias which is a key area for landscape connectivity in the Greater Côa Valley. Here Rewilding Portugal is implementing ecological restoration in a landscape that has in the past been impacted by heavy grazing and wildfires. We’ll hike along trails through native oak forests which are now home to semi-wild reintroduced Sorraia horses. Golden eagle, black stork, and griffon vulture can often be seen flying high above the landscape’s rugged cliffs and escarpments. We’ll return to Casa da Cisterna in the late afternoon and enjoy a cooling dip in the swimming pool before leaving for dinner in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.

Day 5 Águeda River and Upper Douro

After breakfast, we’ll take a short transfer to the Rio Águeda which demarcates the border between Portugal and Spain. We’ll spend the morning exploring the Rio Águeda canyon where there is a Griffon Vulture colony. We’ll enjoy lunch in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo before transferring to Bairro do Casal in Murça do Douro where we’ll spend the next 2 nights. The afternoon is free to explore the charming small village of Murça. In the early evening, we’ll transfer to a nearby wine estate for a wine tasting followed by dinner.

Day 6 Côa Valley rock art

After breakfast, we’ll enjoy a morning walk to visit a little-known Roman archaeological site before enjoying a picnic lunch and guided tour of the Côa Valley Archaeological Park where there are over 1200 decorated rocks, of which 580 have Pleistocene motifs dating from between 18,000 and 14,000 years ago. The rock art illustrates the social economic and spiritual life of the early ancestors of humankind and is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest open-air rock art collections of Paleolithic art in the world. We return to our hotel in the late afternoon before enjoying a private, catered farewell group dinner with aperitifs and local wines at our hotel.

Day 7 Train from Régua to São Bento Station, Porto

After breakfast, the group will transfer to Régua for the 10:49 train to São Bento Station in Porto. The trip services end at the station with group members able to depart to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport for early evening or night flights. For those that wish to spend another night in Porto we are happy to help arrange a hotel if required.
