Carbon footprint

Carbon footprint can be defined as “the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community”.

Rewilding Europe Travel and GHG Emissions

As an organisation Rewilding Europe Travel has developed a Sustainable Management System (SMS) based on adherence with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s Industry Criteria for Tour Operators which includes Criteria D2.1 Greenhouse Gas Emissions –

“Significant greenhouse gas emissions from all sources controlled by the organization are identified, calculated where possible and procedures implemented to avoid or to minimize them. Offsetting of the organization’s remaining emissions is encouraged”.

Offsetting CO2e for Rewilding Europe Travel Trips

Minimising the CO2e footprint of trips

Our trips are designed to have a low carbon footprint.

• We offer tours in Europe, mainly for a European audience.
• We encourage the use of train travel to our trip gateways.
• We focus on small group travel with high minimum sign up so that we fill as many seats in minivans as possible in order to reduce the CO2e footprint per person.
• We explore rewilding landscapes on foot wherever possible thus reducing the amount of CO2 generated through day-to-day transport.
• We encourage our local partners to source food and drinks locally with an emphasis on organic and seasonal produce.
• We actively support the elimination of single-use plastics in our local supply chains.

How do we compensate for our carbon emissions?

Although we focus on managing and minimizing our carbon emissions, we acknowledge that there is residual CO2e that we must mitigate in order to tackle the impact it has on climate change.

Rewilding Europe Travel chooses to mitigate this carbon through supporting rewilding efforts that provide a carbon sink through the revitalisation of wild forest and peatlands. Sequestering carbon through this method also has important benefits for host communities and biodiversity.

In order to mitigate CO2e from our corporate activities and tours we have chosen to partner with Trees for Life, Rewilding Europe’s partner in the Affric Highlands Rewilding Landscape.

We estimate that the average carbon footprint of a Rewilding Europe Travel client who takes a 7-night holiday with us will be around 300 kg CO2e excluding international flights or rail transport to the trip start point. This figure includes transport, activities, accommodation and food.

Rewilding Europe Travel has a Corporate Grove account with Trees for Life which is in essence a digital portal that allows both Rewilding Europe Travel and its travellers to buy native species trees that are planted in the Scottish Highlands.

As a wide range of native trees are grown and planted by Trees for Life it is not possible to give an exact figure for how much CO2e one tree could sequester over its lifetime.

However, in order to offset each client’s CO2e per trip Rewilding Europe Travel will purchase 4 native tree species from Trees for Life and plant them in the Scottish Highlands.

We envisage that over time similar carbon sequestration mechanisms will be available to partner with across a wider range of Rewilding Landscapes.

We encourage our travellers to offset the CO2e generated by their national or international travel to participate in one of our trips. Rewilding Europe Travel can help clients donate to Trees for Life through our Corporate Grove if desired.
